Private lodge and cottages available for rent for fishing, golf and short breaks in the Highlands of Scotland.

For excellent Summer and Autumn salmon fishing, or just a Highland holiday in an extremely comfortable and beautifully sited private lodge or cottage, the Lairg Estate is unrivalled.

Lairg, historically, has always been a crossroads of the Highlands. The Lairg Estate benefits from excellent communications by air, road and rail. This can enable guests to arrive at any one of the Estate’s properties within 5 hours of leaving Gatwick or any of the other regional airports that serve Inverness.

The Lodge and Reid's Cottage have undergone extensive renovations over the past few years and in the case of Phil’s house, it is an entirely new build.

We would hope that all our guests now enjoy a high level of comfortable accommodation that meets with current trends and traveller’s expectations.

For our salmon fishing guests, the Upper Shin’s three and a half miles of double bank fishing offers a chance to encounter some really entertaining sport.

When other rivers in the locality are unfishable due to low water, the Shin runs at a reliable level all season from mid May to the end of September.

The first fish was caught on the 26th May by John Combe, a 10lb salmon caught in Meadow. Since then a few fish have been landed and last week 20th to 25th June. Eleven fish were landed by Giles Woods party. They also reported that there were a lot of fish showing and several that were caught had sealice still on. The fly of choice seems to be the cascade or variants.

Luxury Accommodation

The accommodation available on the Estate can cater to almost any size of party. The Lodge is let for 12 guests. However, with prior agreement, this can be increased to 14. There will be a supplementary charge for these extra guests.

Phil's House is purpose built, and sleeps 6 guests in 3 double or twin rooms. There is an additional room available. However this is only suitable for those who are fairly nimble as the access is by a small and steep staircase. Reid's Cottage has two bedrooms, the ground floor bedroom has a superking bed, but this can be turned into two singles on request. The up stairs bedroom has twin beds and it also has its own bathroom.

Outstanding Fishing

The Upper Shin has a reputation for producing big fish. There have been some truly memorable fish caught in the past few years, some reaching well over 30lbs. This in which would be described as a small to medium Highland river, so the excitement level can be high!

Nowadays we still see big fish but perhaps not quite in the same numbers. Over the last few years two notable fish, one caught on the Lower part of the river, the other on the Upper were both well over 30lbs. The one caught on the Upper in 2014 was estimated at 38+lbs, and the Lower one caught in 2013 was estimated at 35+lbs.

We net a few pools every year to supply our own hatchery with the necessary eggs so the next generation of salmon have a fighting chance to perpetuate the incredible life cycle.

The Environment

The Lairg Estate is a member of the Kyle of Sutherland District Salmon Fisheries Board and the Kyle of Sutherland Fisheries Trust. These two organisations are tasked with managing and improving the fishery and the riparian habitat within the catchment of the five rivers flowing into the Kyle of Sutherland.

Their purpose is to support research and conservation initiatives and to advance public education that will benefit the freshwater fish resources and associated habitat of the region and to preserve for future generations a valuable part of Sutherland's natural heritage. Relax and Unwind

Comfort has been our highest priority and there has been a rolling programme of improvement to all of the properties which we hope our guests will enjoy.

All the houses have extensive and efficient drying rooms so a Highland soaking should not be a problem if the weather is bad!
